Mayans 2012 Prediction

You may have heard a little about the Mayans 2012 prediction. BUT who really were the Mayans? AND why is this such a big deal?

The Mayan Indians were advanced in mathematics, writing, and astronomy. They lived in Mexico and built a famous pyramid in the Yucatan peninsula during the year 1050 BC. This pyramid had 365 steps leading to the top of the pyramid which marked the solar year. However, their most famous invention was their calender.

No one knows for sure how they did it but they were very accurate in their methods. As in VERY accurate, they estimated that a year was longer than 365 days rather 365.242036 days, which is slightly more accurate than the 365.2425 days of the Gregorian calendar we use today. Bear in mind they calculated this around 1000 BC, well before anyone else. The Mayans had different types of calenders: long count, divine, civil, and short among others. They had a 13 day week. The calender that arouses the curiosity is the long calender.

The long calender on the Mayan calender begins August 11, 3114 BC and will be completed on December 21, 2012. This will mark the end of a major 5126 year cycle on the long count calender.

The reason many are interested in this is the fact that during the year 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the milky way galaxy during the winter solstice for the first time in 26,000 years! THIS MEANS: Whatever energy typically stems to the earth from the center of the milky way will be disrupted on 12/21/2012 at 11:11 PM. Coincidence? Some believe that the sun spots could wreck havoc on the earth during this time causing power outages, earthquakes, etc.

A big point to understand. According to the Mayans 12/21/2012 marks the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. So: The Mayans are NOT predicting the end of the world per se. The Mayans believed that time was cyclical, that is, it goes in circles. They believed that there would be 5 cycles in the earth's history---and that the last cycle would end on 12/21/2012. Whether this means the earth is going to disappear or just start a new cycle, that remains to be seen.

A lot of cosmic activity is going to occur between the years of 2012-2015. The Bible tells us that there will be 'signs in the sun, moon, and stars' before the coming return of the Messiah. The earth is shaking, Israel is in turmoil, the Church is in travail; all these signs are the beginning of 'birth pains' (Matthew 24:8).

Second Coming

I came across a really great article recently in the World Magazine. Below is a quick part of the editorial that gives a great picture of the importance of waiting patiently but actively for His coming.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Are you eager for the Second Coming of Christ? Too often people go to extremes. Some people end up overexcited about the Second Coming, others forget about it.

You know something about the overexcited ones, because they draw attention to themselves. A group gets worked up by its leader, who claims he can predict when Christ is coming. They sell their property, dress in white robes, and go out to a mountain on the appointed day.

It is not always so extreme. But William Miller, the founder of the Adventist movement, predicted the Second Coming of Christ in 1843-44, and gained many followers. He narrowed down the time to a cut-off date of March 21, 1844. When that passed, it was reset to April 18, 1844. One of his followers reset it again to Oct. 22, 1844. Charles T. Russell, the original figure behind the Jehovah's Witnesses, predicted the Second Coming would occur in April 1978. One book gave 88 reasons why Jesus Christ would come in 1988.

The Bible gives us simple answers for all these speculations:
"It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority..." Acts 1:7

Among Christians today the prevailing mood threatens to go to the opposite extreme. We forget about the Second Coming and then become immersed in worldliness. In practice we have the attitude that this world is all there is, little better than what the skeptics said in 2 Peter 3, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning."

God has promised that Christ will return and this present world will be dissolved (2 peter 3:10-11). Jesus tells us that until then, we need to 'watch and make the best use of your time.' (Ephesians 5:16)

However long you live on earth, it is only a short span in comparison with eternity (Psalm 90:1-4). And your sufferings in this life will be far outweighed by "an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison" (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Science Advisors warn of 2012 World Catastrophe

It's not just the Mayans anymore. After more than two years of very low sunspot activity and hardly any flares, the sun is ramping up activity according to the National Academy of Science. The expected culmination of solar activity is expected to reach its peach at...you guessed it, the year 2012.

Damage to power grids and other communications systems could be catastrophic, the scientists conclude, with effects leading to a potential loss of governmental control of the situation.

EU calls for New Global Order

Sarkozy, Merkel, Blair Calling for a New World Order. A laughable idea? Not anymore.

PARIS – The head of Europe's biggest economy said Thursday that world leaders should be looking at the massive U.S. deficit and other economic imbalances, not just problems caused by financial markets, as they debate a new global order.

Speaking at a conference in Paris on the future of capitalism, German Chancellor Angela Merkel singled out the American budget deficit and China's current account surplus — the difference between exports and imports — as problems upsetting the global economy.

Technology's Exponential Growth

It was said in the 20th century technology advanced 1000 X's the previous 19 centuries combined. The 21st however is projected to be 1000 X'S all the progress made in that century. I repeat, the gaines in technological advance in both understanding and application will be a THOUSAND times what we just made in the last CENTURY.

Incredible. In the 20th we went from horses to auto's, brought about the computer age, phones, microwaves, nuclear bombs, the list is endless. AND yet all these advances in technology is going to pale in comparison to what lies ahead.

When we start to see kids toys like this from Best of Consumer Electronics Show, we know that mind reading technology will soon be available to all.

"But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end, many shall run to and fro

and knowledge shall increase." (Daniel 12:4)

Two signs given to Daniel to identify the end of times were the rapid increase in travel and knowledge---at an exponential rate.

Roman Road

There was once a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish...it was so fragile. And I fear that it will not survive the winter.
Marcus Aurelius (Gladiator)

Rome died long before it's kingdom ultimately collapsed.

The very virtue of Roman unchanging stoicism became Rome’s undoing. For without change a catastrophe was inevitable. Yet adaptable as the Roman mind was to matters of warfare, it was resistant to any sudden change in political rule.

So, as the Roman elite did, what it was bred to do, as they competed ruthlessly with one another for the highest positions and honors, they unwittingly tore apart the very structure they were sworn to protect.

America's elected officials have been sworn to represent the people's interests, putting the interests of the people above the interests of the lobby and themselves. The culture of pleasure, entertainment, and passivity has replaced the former hard working, responsible, and dedicated generation that formed this great country. As a result only those interest's in which is most immediately gratifying takes place.

A long term energy plan?
-Rather, a yearly vote on a renewable energy credit to give politicians the ability to say they support American made energy.

A long term fix on Social Security?
-Rather, a yearly re-allocation of these funds to that of pet project's in the politicians home town.

A long term solution to a health care system that spends 40 percent more as a percentage of GDP than the next highest-spending country?
-Rather, empty promises and 200,000 deaths by hospital error every year.

Like Rome, America's culture and the leaders they reflect has already died, replacing the necessities of the future for the urgency of the now. The collapse of America's economic superiority is only a collapse of the facade that has concealed to the world what a bystander already knows. Power has corrupted, morality and personal responsibility have been abandoned, and leadership no addresses problems but window dresses them.

When do you predict the earth will end?

Apparently, according to this article we've got less than 5 billion years.

If all else fails, the Earth will almost certainly come to an end in about 5 billion years when it falls into the expanding sun.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to comfort us by relieving us of the fact that the world will not end in our lifetime or give us hope that this despotic evil world will end eventually. Not exactly comforting either way.

Now more than ever, people are looking for answers to the intriguing questions surrounding the ultimate demise of this planet. Why now? The signs have arrived. Just as one can predict weather patterns based on observable traits, we're seeing the culmination of many events prophesied long ago.....

Fear not for when you hear of wars, rumors of wars see that you are not troubled for nation will rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines, pestillences, and earthquakes. All these things are the beginning of sorrows.
Matthew: 24

2008: Signs in the Heavens

"There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Luke 21:25-26

The earth shook in 2008 with hurricanes such as Hurricane Ike hitting Texas and floods spattering Iowa. Although this year saw fewer natural disasters than 2007, the devastation of individual events pushed 2008 to No. 3 in the rankings of most expensive disaster years on record, according to a report by Munich Re Group.

The heavens continue to display wonder and fulfill the role given to them in Genesis 1:1, "God created the heavens and the earth. .... and let them be for signs and seasons.
